Legendary Zulu King Shaka believed his warriors, or impi, were more nimble in battle when barefoot. Thus, he forced them to harden the soles of their feet by jumping up and down and stamping around thorn strewn fields. Warriors who cried out in pain were apparently summarily executed. So, sorta like what happened in Miss Johnson’s class in Grade 3. A bit extreme for sure. But we surfers should take that training just as seriously. Try jumping up and down and stamping all around razor sharp reefs, sea urchins, and gravel strewn parking lots. You could strike a match on my heel and I wouldn’t even know. Dingy Gaan, KakZN
Been chucking surf decals, surf wax scented car air fresheners and various other surf related accessories onto and into my vintage VW combi to recreate a classic surf theme in said vehicle. Does anyone know where I can get me one of those li’l plastic Hawaiian Hula dancers for my car’s dashboard? Coz dem tings is classy AF. Highway Surfer, N2
If I could surf every day of my life for exercise, mental well-being and good vibes, of course I would! However, between variable conditions, life and annoying inconveniences like work and other people and stuff, it’s not practical to surf every day. Hence I gym on the days I don’t surf. And you see all types at gym. Gym bro’s are twits. I wonder if the steroid-enhanced, buffalo-like foolish bro’s realise that all their grunting and screaming while weight training make them sound like they’re being mercilessly molested by Godzilla. Please do not say “DAMMMNNNN!!!” when you hear the price of new wetsuits! It scares our other customers. Rob B R E Highway, Smear
Palaeontology is such a wonderful science! However, current technology doesn’t allow us to know for certain what colour dinosaurs were, nor what their vocalisations sounded like. Many aspects of dinosaurs’ lives we simply cannot know for certain ever sad;y. We’re getting there though. But for now, for all we know, the Jurassic could’ve had a thriving dinosaur surfer scene. For all we know, like, allosaurs tuned each other: “Yeeeuuuw, I’m gonna get so barrelled at south Gondwanaland, sick!” while clutching 8 metre long surfboards made from mososaurus spines.
